Persian language students in Belgrade have welcomed spring and the Persian New Year - Nowruz - by reciting poems in praise of great Iranian poets.

Poetry from Persian masters such as Hafez, Sa`adi, Mowlana (Rumi), Shafiei Kadkani, Ghaisar Aminpour and Fereydoun Moshiri were recited by Persian language students from the University of Belgrade, welcoming the coming of spring and Nowruz on March 21, 2017.

The night of Persian poetry and literature titled ‘Waiting for the Spring’ was held by the Sa`adi Foundation representative in Serbia in collaboration with the Student Union of Department of Philology of the University of Belgrade.

Students and interested people became acquainted with examples of Iranian poetry as well as Nowruz traditions and rituals.

Spring and all its flowers

now joyously break their vow of silence.

It is time for celebration, not for lying low;

You too -- weed out those roots of sadness from your heart.

                                                                        -Hafez

A large number of Persian language students started the event with the recitation of Iranian classical poems by Hafez, Sa’adi and Mowlana with the theme of spring.

Persian language instructor, Saeed Safari, also explained about New Year celebrations and rituals in Iran.

Students at the University of Belgrade may choose from among 34 different languages (Persian being one of them) as their second language of learning.

The number of students at the University of Belgrade interested in the Persian language over the past few years has markedly increased. The school intends to start an independent department for Persian language.

What happens when your soul

Begins to awaken

Your eyes

And your heart

And the cells of your body

To the great Journey of Love?

                                    -Hafez
